### Baking Soda + Aluminum Foil Silver Cleaning Method

**What it removes:** Tarnish (silver sulfide), not scratches or plating wear.

#### Materials
- Aluminum foil
- Baking soda
- Boiling water
- Non-metal container (glass, ceramic, or plastic)

#### Steps
1. **Line the container** completely with aluminum foil, shiny side up.
2. **Place silverware on the foil**, ensuring direct contact with it.
3. **Sprinkle baking soda** generously over the silver.
4. **Pour boiling water** until items are fully submerged.
5. **Wait 2–5 minutes.** You may smell sulfur—this is normal.
6. **Remove, rinse, and dry** thoroughly with a soft cloth.

#### Why It Works
- Tarnish is **silver sulfide (Ag₂S)**.
- Aluminum is more reactive than silver.
- In the presence of baking soda (an electrolyte), sulfur transfers from silver to aluminum.
- The silver is restored without being worn away.

**Key requirement:**
If the silver is **not touching the aluminum**, the reaction will not occur.

#### Important Notes
- Safe for **solid silver**.
- Use caution with **silver-plated** items—repeated use can thin plating over time.
- Do **not** use for silver with glued parts, pearls, or delicate inlays.
