### The forest
From what I can see, this looks like a **mature mixed hardwood forest**, with:
- Numerous **oaks**, both standing and fallen.
- Many smooth gray-barked trees that look very much like **American beech**. The bark is the classic elephant-gray, almost featureless surface. The leaves visible overhead also fit beech well—elliptical with many straight, parallel veins ending in small teeth.
- A healthy amount of coarse woody debris (fallen logs), which is excellent substrate for fungi.
- A fern-rich understory in places, suggesting reasonably moist soils.
Those smooth-barked giants are almost certainly **American beech (*Fagus grandifolia*)**. The carvings on the trunk unfortunately are another clue—beech bark is famously thin and has long been a target for people carving initials.
### The mushroom revisited
Knowing that you're in **Fairfax County, Virginia**, in an oak–beech forest, actually increases my confidence.
Your specimen is still consistent with a **large rosette polypore**, and the habitat strongly favors either:

And apparently the edges got bruised and indeed they did stain black around the edges, which should tell us something more definite according to your earlier diagnosis.

### About edibility
This species has an interesting reputation.
- **Young specimens**—especially the tender outer margins—are considered edible by many experienced mushroom foragers.
- **Older specimens** quickly become tough, leathery, and fibrous toward the center.
- Even when edible, some people experience gastrointestinal upset, so it's not a universally tolerated mushroom.
I wouldn't recommend eating it based solely on this identification. If you were considering that, it would be worth confirming the identification in person with an experienced local mycologist or mushroom club.
### One thing I notice in your kitchen photo
The bruising is concentrated along the **edges and pressure points**, exactly where the bag and transport would have compressed the fruiting body. That pattern is very consistent with mechanical bruising rather than natural aging.
